In 1950, Jan Oort came up with the idea of large and small pieces of ice surrounding the Solar System. The Oort Cloud, which takes its name from this scientist, is thought to be a region approximately 1000 au to 100,000 au  away from the Solar System and surround the Solar System like a giant globe. 1 au (astronomy unit) is the distance between the Sun and Earth and is about 150 million kilometers. Neptune, the most distant planet known, is about 30 au from the Sun.

The distance between the inner boundary of the Oort Cloud and its outer boundary is so great that NASA's spacecraft Voyager 1, which traveled 1.5 million kilometers a day, reached the Oort Cloud at this rate of nearly 300 years, and it came out of the Oort Cloud 30,000 years.
