The first systematic method for naming stars was developed by Johann Bayer in 1603. In this method, the stars in the constellations are named by adding letters in the Greek alphabet to the name of the constellation. The letters are given in order (alpha, beta, gamma ...) starting from the brightest star. For example, the brightest star of the Cygnus Constellation is called Alfa Cygni. Today, however, high resolution and precision telescopes discover a large number of new stars, and these stars are listed in different catalogs based on their brightness and location.
