What is Eye Migration?

Flatfish take their names because their bodies are flat. These creatures living on soft grounds such as sand at the sea floor can continue their lives without being noticed on the sand due to their body structures. Flatfish have one feature that makes them interesting: eye migration. These fish begin their lives, like other fish, with one eye on one side of the head and the other on the other. Over time, one eye “slides” next to the other eye. Fish flatten to the right or left of the body (depending on the species).
