Vredefort, the largest known crater in the world, is located in South Africa. It is estimated that the crater was formed about 2 billion years ago, when a meteorite about 10 kilometers in diameter hit the Earth, its initial diameter was approximately 300 kilometers. However, its current dimensions are smaller. In the center of the Vredefort Crater there is an elevation with a diameter of about 40 kilometers. The diameter of the hillock can reach 80 kilometers near the bottom of the crater.
