The flowers of plants often emit beautiful fragrances. Fragrant substances in flowering plants are chemical compounds that can easily evaporate. Plants secrete these substances mostly to attract pollen-bearing creatures. This process is very important for flowering plants, since egg cells in flowering plants are pollinated by male reproductive cells in pollen carried by pollination. Plants can also emit odors in order to protect against disease and remove living things that harm them.
The scent of a flower can be caused by different chemical compounds. For example, some types of orchids and roses have 100 different fragrance chemical compounds. In some plants, fragrant substances are produced by specialized secretory tissues. In some plants, it is secreted by certain cells in different parts of the flower (for example, petals). These structures, in which fragrant chemical compounds are produced, are called osmofores.
