The pupils, which bring the light to the retina for vision to occur, grow and shrink sensitive to light. Since the light is intense in very bright environments, our pupils become smaller and grow to get as much light as possible into the eye in the dark. The patient's condition is checked by shedding light on the eye in first aid applications after an accident or an event that endangers life. While the size of the pupils indicates internal bleeding, the inability of the pupilsto react to light is an indication that the brain cortex is not working. The reduction of the pupilswith the pulse stopped indicates that oxygen delivery to the brain was stopped recently, so it is possible to bring the patient back to life with a heart massage. However, light is not the only reason that the pupils grow and shrink.

When we get excited, when we focus on an issue or an object, our pupils grow. Other situations that lead to the growth of the pupilsare mainly due to excitement and focus. For example, when looking at someone we love or fall in love with, our pupils grow. On the other hand, while looking at someone we hate, our pupilsrespond in the same way. In the studies conducted on the subject, it was seen that the pupilsgrew when interesting pictures were shown to the subjects. An interesting result of these experiments is that the pupils of women grow more than men. This may indicate that women experience emotions more intensely and spend more energy to concentrate their attention at some point.

It was also the subject of research that large pupils make the person more attractive. In 1965, the psychiatrist Dr. Eckhardt Hess showed a group of male subjects the same female portrait photos, except for one factor. The variable in the experiment was the size of women's pupils. Although the subjects stated that the two photos shown to them were exactly the same, they were choosing the photo of the woman with large pupils, especially when asked which one was more attractive. If the results of the study mentioned above and the big pupils make people look more attractive, it seems likely that you will be influenced by someone who grows in the pupils because they take care of you.

Dr. Returning to Hess' work, long ago, in the Middle Ages, women made the pupils look bigger by using the belladona (the beautiful herb), before it was scientifically determined that the big pupils made the person more attractive. The fact that the plant contains the atropine active substance that causes the growth of the pupils, as well as toxins that negatively affect vision, may have caused this habit to be abandoned over time.
